Comprising dozens of common household objects fastened together and balancing perfectly on a scale It’s a Fine Balance is a tribute to Hong Kong’s homeware shops where you can find everything you are looking for and what you did not know you needed. These treasure troves are typically packed from floor to ceiling with household goods from buckets to brooms, stools to cleaning supplies, tableware to lampshades and everything in between.

Julie Progin shares, “I’m moved by the resilience of Hong Kong’s traditional ground floor stores where the shopkeepers find creative solutions to display as much commodities as they can in their tiny spaces. The art of compacting, stacking, hanging, strapping objects together as a space-saving technique produces beautifully complex patterns and systems that I explore in my drawings.”
