To build on her visual exploration of Hong Kong’s culinary culture, Julie Progin spends time exploring local wet markets, farms, fishing communities, where she archives—through drawing and photography—everything from food to commodities, stalls to transport.
Known for its unique texture, jellyfish is a popular delicacy in Hong Kong typically served as a cold appetizer, salad, or side dish. Edible jellyfish are found and caught in Hong Kong waters. Traditionally cured in the sun, blooms or jellyfish can frequently be seen drying in the streets and alleys of coastal villages before being packed and consumed. The preservation method produces beautiful patterns that inspired Julie Progin for her Jellyfish series where the marine animal is turned into a witty character disguised as noodles, relaxing under the sun in a bowl of soup or making a narrow escape from the kitchen using chopsticks as stilts.
